What the EPG does
Without a guide, a channel list is just names. You can see that a channel exists, but not whether it is currently showing the football or a shopping segment. The EPG turns that list into something you can plan around.
A working guide typically gives you programme titles and descriptions, start and end times, a grid you can scroll forward through, and — on players that support it — a reminder or a jump into catch-up. Ours runs 7 days ahead, which is a fairly standard window.
Where the data comes from
This is the part worth understanding, because it explains nearly every EPG complaint.
The programme data does not travel inside the video stream. It is a completely separate file, usually in a format called XMLTV, fetched independently by your player. So your IPTV setup is really doing two jobs at once: pulling video streams, and pulling a schedule document that describes them.
Those two things are then matched up. Each channel in your playlist carries an identifier — a tvg-id — and the guide file contains listings tagged with the same identifiers. The player joins them. When a channel shows no listings, it is almost always because those two identifiers did not match, not because the guide is broken.
Why the guide is empty when you first set up
An XMLTV file covering hundreds of channels for seven days is large. Downloading and indexing it takes time — on a modest device such as a Firestick, several minutes is entirely normal.
So an empty guide two minutes after setup is expected behaviour, not a fault. Let it finish. After the first load, players refresh it in the background and it is no longer noticeable.
Why coverage is uneven between channels
Guide data is compiled per channel, and not every channel has an equally good source. In practice:
- Major national channels almost always have a full seven days with descriptions.
- Smaller or regional channels may have partial listings, or titles without descriptions.
- Some niche channels may have none at all.
This is a property of the available source data rather than a setting anyone can change. No provider can invent listings for a channel nobody publishes a schedule for — and any provider claiming a complete guide for every channel is overstating it.
Getting the most out of your guide
- Let the first download finish before judging anything.
- Check the EPG option is switched on in your player's settings — some default to off.
- Hide groups you never watch. A guide covering 200 channels is far more usable than one covering 2,000.
- Choose a player with a good guide if live TV is your priority. TiviMate's grid is the benchmark on Android; see our player comparison.
- Set the correct time zone on the device. A guide that looks shifted by a few hours is nearly always a device clock problem.
If your guide is missing entirely or showing the wrong programmes, our EPG troubleshooting guide works through the causes in order.
Frequently asked questions
What does EPG stand for?
Electronic Programme Guide. It is the on-screen television schedule showing what is on now, what is next, and what is coming over the following days.
Why does my IPTV guide show no programmes?
Usually one of three reasons: the guide is still downloading on first run, the EPG option is switched off in your player, or the channel identifiers in your playlist do not match those in the guide file. The first is by far the most common.
How far ahead does an IPTV EPG go?
Typically around seven days, which is what FelixIPTV provides. The exact window depends on how much data the source publishes for each channel.
Why do some channels have no listings at all?
Guide data is compiled per channel and not every channel has a published schedule source. Major national channels usually have full listings; smaller or niche channels sometimes have partial data or none.
