Troubleshooting

IPTV not working: a troubleshooting guide

When IPTV stops working the temptation is to start changing things at random. Resist it. Almost every fault falls into one of five layers, and testing them in order will identify the cause in a few minutes instead of an evening.

Start by isolating the layer

Five things must all work: your details, your player, your device, your network, and the service. Two quick tests narrow it down more than anything else you can do.

  1. Try a different device. Enter the same details in a player on your phone using mobile data rather than Wi-Fi. If it works there, the service and your details are fine and the fault is your television or your network. If it fails there too, the problem is your details or the service.
  2. Try a different channel. If one fails and others play, nothing is broken — that is a single source, and no further troubleshooting will help.

Those two tests take two minutes and eliminate most of the possibilities.

Layer 1 — Your details

The most common cause of a total failure, and the easiest to dismiss because you are certain you typed it correctly.

  • Check character by character. Long M3U URLs are copied incorrectly constantly.
  • Look for a trailing space at the end of a pasted field.
  • Check for autocapitalisation. Phone keyboards capitalise first letters; these fields are case sensitive.
  • Do not change http to https or add a trailing slash to a server address.
  • Check the expiry. If the subscription has reached its end date it will simply stop, because ours do not auto-renew.

Delete the playlist entirely and re-add it rather than editing the existing entry — some players cache a failed configuration.

Layer 2 — Your player

If the details are right, the app is next. An app that updated overnight is a classic cause of "it worked yesterday".

  • Force-stop and reopen the player.
  • Clear its cache in the device app settings — this fixes a surprising share of odd behaviour.
  • Check for an update, and note whether one installed recently.
  • Try a different player with the same details. If a second app works, you have found it.

Player-specific faults are covered in more depth in IPTV player not working, and our player comparison covers alternatives.

Layer 3 — Your device

Televisions and streaming sticks accumulate problems that a restart genuinely clears.

  • Power cycle properly. Unplug at the wall for thirty seconds — standby is not the same thing.
  • Free storage and memory. Delete unused apps; force-stop background ones.
  • Check the date and time. A wrong clock breaks secure connections and shifts the programme guide.
  • Consider its age. A first-generation stick will struggle with 4K no matter what you do.

Layer 4 — Your network

If it works on mobile data but not at home, you are here.

  • Restart the router and give it two minutes.
  • Test the speed on the failing device, not on your phone by the router.
  • Switch to Ethernet if at all possible.
  • Turn off any VPN temporarily to rule it out.
  • Check DNS. If the app cannot reach the server at all while other internet works normally, changing the device's DNS to a public resolver is worth a try.

Buffering specifically — rather than total failure — has its own dedicated guide.

Layer 5 — The service

If you have reached this point having confirmed the details are correct, a second player fails identically, the device restarts cleanly, and the connection is solid on Ethernet, then the fault is likely at our end.

That is the point to message us — and the troubleshooting you have already done makes it much faster to resolve. Tell us the device and player, what exactly happens, when it started, and what you have tried. We can then check from our side instead of asking you to repeat all of the above.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my IPTV stopped working suddenly?

The three most common reasons are that the subscription reached its end date, the player app updated overnight and changed behaviour, or the device or router needs a restart. Check the expiry date first, since plans do not renew automatically.

How do I know if the problem is my IPTV provider or my setup?

Enter the same details in a different player on a phone using mobile data rather than Wi-Fi. If it works there, your details and the service are fine and the fault is your television or home network. If it fails there too, the cause is your details or the service.

Do I need to restart my router for IPTV?

It is worth doing once if the router has been running for months, since it clears congestion and reassigns connections. It is not a routine requirement, and if you need to restart it constantly the underlying network problem is worth investigating.

Why does IPTV work on my phone but not my TV?

That points at the television specifically — usually its Wi-Fi reception, which is often much weaker than your phone's, or an app or memory problem on the set. Run a speed test on the television itself and try a wired connection.
